Salem is the Gateway to New Hampshire occupying exits 1 & 2 on I-93. It's location alone would make Salem a desirable place to live. The city is 26 miles north of Boston, 28 miles from the NH seacoast and only an hour from the region's lakes and mountains. Salem is celebrating its 250 birthday during 2000.
 
Six area lakes and ponds offer plenty of recreational opportunities. Hedgehog Park has public swimming: the Field of Dreams Park boasts a children's playground and summer concerts for free. Major tourist attractions include Rockingham Park (pari-mutual horse racing), Canobie Lake Park, a family amusement park is know as one of the most beautiful amusement parks in the country" and America's Stonehenge in North Salem that is claimed to be the oldest megalithic site on this continent.
