Exeter, NH

Exeter, NH is located along the freshwater Exeter River where it joins the saltwater Squamscott River. Exeter is home to Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA) one of the nation's leading prep-schools. Founded in 1781, one of PEA's first well known graduates was Daniel Webster. Exeter is steeped in history:
  • Exeter served as the state's capital during the Revolutionary War.
  • The first President to visit Exeter was George Washington.
  • In 1843, a Democrat named Amos Tuck was thrown out of his party for supporting the abolishment of slavery. On October 12, Amos formed a new political party call the Republicans. • During the summer months the world's oldest continuously organized brass band provides free concerts in the bandstand that is located in the center of downtown.
  • The bandstand was designed by Henry Bacon who was the architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Daniel Chester French a native of Exeter sculpted the stature of Abe sitting in-front of the Lincoln Memorial as well as Exeter's World War I memorial of "Mother Town and Soldier Son".

The Gilman Garrison House built in 1690 is open to the public from June to October. The Ladd-Gilman House, home to the American Independence museum (AIM) is open from May to October.
