| Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to
2000, South Hampton’s population increased by 14.1 percent,
adding 104 residents for a total of 844. It is the second
smallest town in Rockingham County, only Newington is
smaller, and is one of 55 New Hampshire communities with
population under 1,000. The median age is 40.4, with 24.9
percent of the population under the age of 18 and 13.5
percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is
301, with an average size of 2.8 persons. Of those, 244 are
family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons. As
of April 1, 2000, there were 309 total housing units. |

| Population density, 2002: 108.7 persons per
square mile of land area. South Hampton contains 7.9 square
miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water
area. |

| Origin: One of the first towns granted by
Governor Benning Wentworth, South Hampton was chartered in
1742 from parts of Amesbury and Salisbury, Massachusetts.
Over the years, the town lost territory to Hampton Falls,
Seabrook, and Newton, but gained territory from East
Kingston. At one time, the town was home to over twelve
different religious sects. |
