2000, Plaistow’s population grew by 5.9 percent to 7,747,
adding 431 residents. The median age is 37.4 percent, with
25.8 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.1
percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is
2,871, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of those, 2,149
are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons.
As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,927 total housing units. |

| Origin: Once part of Haverhill,
Massachusetts, Plaistow was named in 1749 when it was set
aside to be an English "plaistowe," meaning "an open space
or greenwood, near the center of a village where the maypole
stood and where sports at holiday times were carried on."
Other places in and around the town were named Timburlain,
Policy Pond, Spicket Meadow, and Amesbury Peak. |
