| Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to
2000, population in Fremont grew by 36.3 percent, adding 934
residents for a total of 3,510. The median age is 35.5, with
29.1 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 7.2
percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is
1,165, with an average size of 3.0 persons. Of those, 983
are family households, with an average size of 3.2 persons.
As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,201 total housing units. |

| Origin: Once a part of Exeter known as
Poplin, after an English mill town. The town was renamed
Fremont in 1854, after General John C. Fremont, who was the
first candidate of the Republican Party in the presidential
election of 1856. Benton, in Grafton County, bears the name
of Fremont's father-in-law, Senator Thomas Hart Benton. |
