| Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000,
Atkinson’s population grew by 19.1 percent to 6,178, a
numeric difference of 990. The median age is 40.9, with 24.5
percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.4
percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is
2,317, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of those, 1,777
are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons.
As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,431 total housing units. |

| Population density, 2002: 571.3 persons per square
mile of land area. Atkinson contains 11.2 square miles of
land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area. |

| Origin: Named for Colonel Theodore Atkinson, whose
farm once covered nearly all of the area set aside from
Plaistow that became the town. He was a brother-in-law to
Governor Benning Wentworth, and served as secretary of the
colony until the Revolution. |
